The method involves determining temperature of an electrochemical cell (2) of a motor vehicle (1), and defining an upper state of charging value for the cell depending on the temperature. The cell is charged until a charging state of the cell reaches the upper state of the charging value. The upper state of the charging value is defined with a decreasing value when the temperature is increased, and the upper state of the charging value is defined such that the upper state of the charging value is linearly changed with the temperature in a temperature range. An independent claim is also included for a charging device for charging an electrochemical cell that supplies electrical power to an electrical prime mover of a motor vehicle.
