The preform is open-porous. The volume portion of the pores in the preform is 30-60%. The pore size in the preform is = 200 nm, where a maximum pore size is 200 nm. The carbide ceramic material, which is produced by carbide former-infiltration of a preform containing porous carbon, comprises a mass portion of free carbon (less than 1%) and a mass portion of free carbide former (less than 1%).
