The method involves determining the direction of actuating movement within the overlapping detection areas as a valid movement direction for actuating the motor vehicle-fitting element. The movement through the detection areas is detected by two sensors and the total duration of the movement through the detection areas is determined with a control device. An independent claim is also included for a sensor-controlled actuator with a data processing unit for a motor vehicle-fitting element.
