The engine has a cylinder (2) containing an alternative movement piston (21), and a cylinder head traversed by an exhaust pipe (12). A fuel injector (11) communicates with the cylinder. The cylinder head has a roof shaped inner face to close the cylinder. The injector emerges from a combustion chamber such that its position with respect to the exhaust pipe and its inclination with respect to a symmetric axis (X-X') of the cylinder are adapted to permit injection of fuel in an interface zone. An independent claim is also included for a method for optimizing combustion in a direct injection engine for a motor vehicle functioning.
