It describes a process for the preparation of a catalyst comprising at least one porous support and at least one metal phase containing nickel and tin, in a proportion such that the molar ratio sn / or is between 0,01 and 0,2, said process comprising at least the following steps: a) the deposition of nickel on at least said support in order to obtain a supported single-metal catalyst based on nickel, b) the reduction of the said monometallic catalyst in the presence of at least one reducing gas, c) the deposition, in the gaseous phase and in the presence of at least one reducing gas, at least one organometallic compound of tin on said monometallic catalyst is reduced, and d) the activation of the solid from the said step c) in the presence of at least one reducing gas.
