Synthesizing 3,5-dichloro-anisole comprises (a) reacting 1,3,5-trichloro-benzene and methanolate of alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal in a first aprotic polar solvent, (b) precipitating the obtained product in a second solvent, and (c) collecting the obtained precipitate, where the first and second solvents are not part of the substances identified as carcinogenic, mutagenic and/or toxic for the reproduction by Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament and the Council of 16 December 2008. An independent claim is included for a process for the synthesis of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene, comprising the synthesis of the 3,5-dichloro anisole by the process, and conversion of the 3,5-dichloro anisole to 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene.
