The method involves displacing a machine tool toward a predetermined position to control a cutting tool, and measuring a dimensional characteristic parameter of a state of the machine tool. Variation of positioning of the machine tool is calculated with respect to reference positioning in order to deduce positioning corrections to a piece and/or to the machine tool before machining operation. A digital image of the machine tool is captured by utilizing a vision unit (6) i.e. telecentric lens camera. The dimensional characteristics of the machine tool are extracted by obtained digital image. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a cutting tool mounted on a machine tool.
