A method of producing an activated supported cobalt catalyst comprises the steps of:i) Impregnating a support material with a source of cobaii) Calcining the impregnated support material to produce a supported catalyst in oxide form;iii) Activating the supported catalyst material with a reducing gas (e.g. hydrogen);iv) Modifying the activated supported catalyst with a modifying gas (e.g. an oxidative gas comprising CO, CO2, O2, air or steam); andv) Activating the modified activated supported catalyst with a reducing gas. The activated supported cobalt catalyst may be used in a Fischer Tropsch synthesis reaction. The method may give a catalyst with increased selectivity for C5+hydrocarbons in F-T synthesis without detriment to activity.
