PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coil alignment checking device capable of positively determining whether or not alignment of a steel sheet coil is correctly performed without deteriorating space efficiency, and to provide a coil alignment checking method.;SOLUTION: After aligning the height direction of a coil 1, an end face of the coil 1 before a reel is inserted is photographed by a camera 14 from the axial direction, and a distance (distance between centers) L between an inner diameter center C1 of the coil 1 and a center C2 of the reel 2 is calculated based on the photographed image. When the distance L between the centers exceeds an allowable value L_TH, it is determined that the distance L between the centers is outside the allowable range and the alignment of the coil 1 is not performed correctly.
