PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst and a method for gasifying lignin with supercritical water used as a reaction field.SOLUTION: The catalyst for gasifying lignin is used in such a lignin gasification reaction, that lignin is converted into fuel gas in supercritical water, and comprises a graphite-deposited ruthenium catalyst obtained by depositing a ruthenium metal on the graphite having high surface area. The method for gasifying lignin comprises a step of converting the lignin mainly based on woody biomass into fuel gas in the supercritical water by using the ruthenium-deposited graphite catalyst. A technique for efficiently converting lignin into fuel gas such as methane and hydrogen with the selectivity higher than in a conventional way and a technique for highly utilizing woody biomass resources can also be provided.
