PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase high-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system signals as much as possible, so long as quality characteristics are satisfied, when a high-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system is incorporated in a low-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system.;SOLUTION: A wavelength division multiplex system comprises: a transmit side wavelength division multiplexer including optical transmit units for a low-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system, optical transmit units for a high-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system, and first and second optical multiplexers; and a receive-side wavelength division demultiplexer including optical receive units for a low-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system, optical receive units for a high-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system, and first and second optical demultiplexers. The number of the optical transmit units for a high-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system and their wavelengths, as well as the number of the optical receive units for a high-density wavelength division multiplex transmission system and their wavelengths, are determined based on quality characteristics affected by wavelength transmission properties of the first and the second optical multiplexers and those of the first and the second optical demultiplexers.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT
