PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a release control device and release control method of a single lens reflex camera which are capable of increasing the number of photographing sheets per unit time in consecutive photographing by shortening a release time lag from a mirror-up start to an exposure start. PSOLUTION: The single lens reflex camera includes a mirror device having a mirror which is moved to an observation position for guiding an object luminous flux entering from a detachable photographic optical system to a finder optical system and to a photographing position for guiding the object luminous flux to an imaging means and a diaphragm control device which keeps the diaphragm device of the photographic optical system in an open state, during observation and performs a diaphragming operation for allowing diaphragming up to a set diaphragm value, during photographing. Further, the single lens reflex camera includes a control means which allows the mirror device to start an up operation for moving the mirror to the photographing position and allows the diaphragm control device to start the diaphragming operation, when release is started and allows the imaging means to start an imaging operation, when the later one of the diaphragming operation and the up operation is completed.
