PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a face gear that hardly causes the unevenness of rotation, even if an error is generated in an assembling dimension.SOLUTION: In this engagement progress direction-line determination method of the face gear, the face gear and a pinion gear are engaged with each other by simulation, and arranged so as to be displaced with respect to a reference engagement height. Then, the pinion gear is rotated and a motion curve at the rotation is formed. From motion curves of three-tooth amounts, there are obtained a first cross point and a second cross point of three motion curves, a first linear line for connecting both cross points, and a third cross point between a vertical line descended to the first linear line from error positions of the motion curves and the first linear line. Then, a rotation error at the third cross point is calculated, and a connecting line which connects a first contact position and a second contact position at the first and second cross points, and a third contact position in which the face gear is rotated by an amount of the error position from the third cross point is determined as an engagement progress direction line.
