PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of simultaneously solving the problems of double feed and squeak of paper sheets.;SOLUTION: In a separation pad type paper feeder 7 comprising a paper feed tray for loading paper sheets thereon, a paper feed roller 12 abutted on the highest paper sheet in the paper feed tray to feed out the paper sheets, and a separating pad 13 which is pressed against the paper feed roller 12 to separate the paper sheets one by one, the separating pad 13 has a curved shape with a center portion thereof in the width direction being concave over the entire width B, and a portion b1 outside the nip width b with the paper feed roller 12 at both ends in the width direction of the separating pad 13 is located on the paper feed roller 12 side from a tangential line T at the center in the width direction of the separating pad 13.
