PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonwoven fabric capable of being applied in various uses by being excellent in mechanical strength in addition to its ion permeability, gas permeability or liquid permeability, and a method for producing the nonwoven fabric. PSOLUTION: This nonwoven fabric containing a thermoplastic resin fiber and a heat resistant fiber consisting of a resin having a melting point or carbonizing point higher than the melting point of the thermoplastic resin fiber is provided with that the nonwoven fabric-constituting fibers are fixed by melting the thermoplastic resin having the same composition with the thermoplastic resin fiber-constituting thermoplastic resin in a state of without forming a film. The nonwoven fabric is also produced by performing a heat-treatment on a fiber web obtained by using the thermoplastic fibers and heat resistant fibers and melting only a part of the thermoplastic resin fibers for melt-fixing.
