PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a defect in each display region with high accuracy, in the case that an inspection pattern simultaneously having at least two kinds or more display regions with mutually different gray scale levels exists on a transmissive display panel.;SOLUTION: Defect inspection is conducted for a liquid crystal panel 11 performing a gray scale display by controlling fluctuation of transmitted light quantity. The inspecting device includes: a backlight unit 1 which has a plurality of fluorescent tubes 1a through which the liquid crystal panel 11 is irradiated with fluorescence from behind and controls the fluctuation of irradiating light quantity of each fluorescent tube 1a toward the liquid crystal panel 11; a liquid crystal panel turn-on controlling device 3 which displays the inspection pattern simultaneously having at least two kinds or more display regions with mutually different gray scales on the liquid crystal panel 11; and a backlight controller 2 which controls the backlight unit 1 in such a way that the higher the gray scale levels of the display region, the irradiating light quantity of the fluorescent tubes 1a is made smaller, and the lower the gray scale levels of the display region, the irradiating light quantity of the fluorescent tubes 1a is made larger.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
