PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low Ni-high Mn austenitic stainless steel having mechanical properties and corrosion resistance more satisfactory than those of SUS430, and in which stress corrosion cracking resistance as the problem in austenitic stainless steels is more excellent than that of SUS304, and also, expensive Ni is reduced.;SOLUTION: The above problem is solved by a low Ni-high Mn austenitic stainless steel having excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance and cost performance which has a composition comprising, by mass, ≤0.05% C, 2.0 to 4.0% Si, 3.0 to 7.0% Mn, ≤0.045% P, ≤0.005% S, 16.0 to 18.0% Cr, 3.0 to 5.0% Ni, 1.0 to 3.5% Cu and 0.1 to 0.3% N, if required, further comprising one or two kinds selected from ≤1.5% Mo and ≤2.0% Al, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and satisfying Md30≤-20 wherein Md30 is defined by formula (1): Md30=551-462(C+N)-9.2Si-8.1Mn-29(Ni+Cu)-13.7Cr-18.5Mo.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
