PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic material that makes variation in spectrum, refractive index, or polarization state with high sensitivity and efficiently absorbs two photons, i.e. an organic material having large two photon absorption sectional area.;SOLUTION: Disclosed is a two photon absorbing material which has a two photon absorbing material expressed by general formula (I) as a basic structure. In the formula, Ar₁ is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group, Ar₂ and Ar₃ are independently bivalent groups of substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group, Ar₄ is a substituted or unsubstituted bivalent group of thiophene, biphenyl, fluorene or anthracene, and Ar₅ and Ar_{6 are} independently substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon groups.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
