PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-photon absorption optical recording and reproducing method characterized by a high-sensitivity recording based on refractive index modulation, absorption modulation or emission intensity modulation by utilizing two-photon absorption of a two-photon absorption compound and subsequent reproduction performed by exposing a recording material to light and detecting the difference in refractive index, transmittance or emission intensity, and a two-photon absorption optical recording material performing the recording and reproduction, particularly a two-photon absorption optical recording material with an improved dark stability of recording. PSOLUTION: The two-photon absorption optical recording material contains at least the two-photon absorption compound that attains an excited state by two-photon absorption, a recording component performing recording based on refractive index modulation or absorption modulation by developing a color-developing reaction or a bleaching reaction by inducing electronic transition or energy transfer in the two-photon absorption compound at the excited state and a polymer having a basic moiety, a cation or an anion on it side chain.
