PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for an electrode by which reduction in a quantity of platinum used can be made without impairing performance as a fuel cell. PSOLUTION: A compound has an oxidation and reduction cycle which works as a reducing agent at a potential lower than an oxidation reduction potential of oxygen and works as an oxidant at a potential higher than an oxidation reduction potential of hydrogen and hydrogen ion. The air electrode for the fuel cell contains as an oxidation reduction catalyst a compound such as NHPI whose standard oxidation-reduction potential is in the range of 0.00V to 1.40V.
