Disclosed is a 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine derived tridentate ligand represented by formula (I):; wherein definitions of Y¹, Y², and R are the same as those defined in the specification. ;Also disclosed are a metal complex containing the aforesaid tridentate ligand and a dye-sensitized solar cell containing the metal complex.
