SYSTEM FOR COMMUNICATING INFORMATION BETWEEN A DETECTION DEVICE AND A WIRELESS DEVICE, AND METHODS OF PRESERVING BATTERY LIFE IN A RADIO INTERFACE UNIT, AND OF COMMUNICATING BETWEEN A RADIO INTERFACE UNIT AND A PORTABLE TERMINAL. A system for communicating information between a detection device and a wireless device is provided. The system usually includes a detection device adapted to monitor a condition related to a power system. A radio interface unit is in communication with the detection device by a communication member. A wireless device is furthermore provided that it is in radio communication with the radio interface unit such that the detection device communicates information to the wireless device via a radio interface unit. The system components are furthermore adapted to withstand severe conditions (for example, prolonged exposure to water).
