The invention relates to a formulation comprising a glucose based oral rehydration salt (ORS) and a water and an electrolyte absorption enhancer (WEAE). WEAE of the present invention is a coumarin fraction extracted from Hemidesmes indicus root. It enhances the absorption of water and electrolyte from intestine in acute diarrhea. The WEAE has significant hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation inhibition activity, super oxide scavenging activity and also exhibits in vivo inhibition of lipid peroxidation.
