The invention relates to the construction and the method of manufacturing Valve Regulated Lead Acid battery with plastic reinforced bi-polar plates provided with an augmented electrolyte supply. The bi-polar plates have two layered common lead conductors with positive active material on both sides of one layer and negative active material on both sides of the other layer. The two sheets are integrated at their peripheries with an ionic barrier interposed between them. The active materials, being pastes made from lead oxide, sulphuric acid and required additives, are supported on the reinforcing plastic meshes anchored to these lead sheets. The electrolyte used being dilute sulphuric acid, an augmented supply of electrolyte is provided through Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) separators housed between the ionic barrier and the two layers of the lead conductor carrying the active materials. However, the end plates are uni-polar and carry the terminal plates, though, however they are also made with two layers of lead sheet with active material supported on reinforced plastic meshes on both sides of only one layer of lead sheet and the AGM separators housed between the two layers of lead sheet providing the augmented electrolyte. This electrolyte contained in these AGM separators augments the electrolyte available in the AGM separators interspersed between the bi-palar plates as well as between the bi-polar and the end uni-polar plates. The gases developed during charging are vented out through a novel regulating valve. The battery made as per the invention gives an energy density of about 120 Wh/dm3, a life expectancy of 4-5 years, Also, the batteries are capable of accepting very high rates of charge and a totally discharged battery can be recharged in about 1 hour"s time
