The present invention is directed toward an easy and economical method for detection of ferric iron. Since iron is a crucial parameter in stabilizing ecosystem as well as contributing significant role in biological system, it is peremptory to detect it"s concentration from the same. Variety of methods were proposed and used, but all these approaches are cumbersome and time intensive. However, cost-effective approach appears at the epicenter for iron detection. Present invention described herein can facilitate the easy detection of ferric iron using optica! spectrofluorometric analysis. Binding of ferric iron with fluorescent siderophore secreted in broth culture by P. putida, causes change in the emission intensity and hence employed in proposed method. The method is most sensitive, selective, and fast and utilizes unprocessed culture supernatant for the same purpose. Its effectiveness was examined even in the presence of various components viz. metal ions, proteins, and pH.
