The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of enantiomerically pure mirtazapine having substantial enantiomeric excess of the S-(+)-mirtazapine of the formula (la) or R-(-) mirtazapine of formula (lb). Further, the present invention also relates to a process for the preparation of desmethylmirtazapine of formula (2), an intermediate of mirtazapine.
