Collaboration spaces for online social networks with multiple display areas having applications

A graphical user interface associated with a social network to enable interaction among defined members in the social network is disclosed. The graphical user interface comprises first, second, and third display areas. The first display area has a first section having multiple icons selectable by a first member which includes a launch social space icon, a launch group activity icon, and an invite new member icon. The second section includes multiple social space icons each corresponding to a social network and providing a link to a corresponding social space. The second display area includes a side bar for providing social network status where the side bar has user-selectable icons corresponding to each social space icon. Each user-selectable icon is configured to present corresponding status information including a numerical indication of a fraction of total group members active in a respective social space and provide presence indication of active group members in the respective social space responsive to hovering a cursor over the user-selectable icon. The third display area provides a notification of a change associated with at least one social space. The notification includes an iconic representation of the social space, a textual description of the change, a user selectable entry point to an activity or a file associated with the change, and an expandable options menu. The second display area is visible independent of a visible presence of the first or the third display areas, and the third display area is visible when the change associated with the social space occurs and one of a new member of the social space activates, the first member is active in the social space, or the first member is operating a computing device for accessing the social space.
