The invention relates to a process for preparing sintering powders of intermetallic compounds IrAl and IrAlemployed in obtaining irradiation targets for γ sources. According to the invention, the process is a mechanical alloying process carried out by grinding the Ir and Al granules in a protective argon atmosphere, in a planetary mill with stainless steel balls. The ratio between the balls volume and the material volume is 20:1 at an enclosure filling degree of 35%, the milling time up to the IrAl compound formation is 8 h and the milling time up the IrAlcompound formation is 28 h. The resulting irradiation target has a uniform dispersion of the activable element and reduced shielding factor.
