The invention relates to a laminar covering element with self-tensioning capability, for awnings and the like, of the type constituted by multiple elongate, substantially rectangular fabric strips (1, 2), arranged one alongside another, with partial overlapping of the edge regions (3, 4) thereof and which are affixed together by sewing (6), or welding, with or without adhesive or another medium, such that the fabric of the individual strips is constituted by threads that have elastic properties with the capability to recover from the deformations to which said strips are subject in the course of the rolling and unrolling of the laminar element, thereby preventing the formation of wrinkles after prolonged use.
