An air traffic control system, for use by a controller that controls a plurality of airplanes (200), comprising a processor (318), an input device (316) and a device (312, 314) of visualization, further comprising: a means (1082) of path prediction for calculating a trajectory for each of said aircraft (200), for entering aircraft position data detected and for recalculating said trajectories based on said position data, a conflict detection means (1084) for detecting, on the basis of said trajectories, future circumstances in which pairs of said aircraft violate predetermined proximity tests, and to produce a display on said display device indicating said circumstances, and a means (316, 320) for entering instruction data corresponding to instructions issued by said controller to one of said aircraft (200), characterized in that said conflict detection means (1084) is arranged to use a first proximity test (422) and a second, more restrictive proximity test (426); and because the system is arranged to display a symbol (3146a-9) that represents pairs of aircraft that violate the second test (426) in a first display mode (3146b), and those that violate the first set (422), but not the second set (426), in a second mode (3146e, 3146g) of display, and because the system is arranged, before the introduction of a similar instruction by a controller with respect to a pair of aircraft in the second display mode, to change the display mode of the symbol for said pair, from the second display mode to a third display mode (3146a, 3146f), which indicates that no additional action is necessary.
