Procedure for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores, including the procedure the following steps: a) enrich the ore by purification, screening and classification to separate it into a fraction of enriched concentrated ore and a fraction of low grade waste thick, siliceous that is substantially free of fines and clay materials; b) separately process the concentrated ore fraction for the recovery of nickel and coba and c) subjecting the low grade waste fraction to a battery leaching process with a solution supplemented with acid to create a battery leach for the additional nickel and cobalt recovery processing, in which the enrichment waste fraction presents between 0.3% and 0.7% nickel and between 0.01% and 0.03% cobalt.
