New rheology modifiers for modifying the rheological behavior of coating compositions

A process for preparing a coating composition comprising the steps of (i) providing rheology modifiers, (ii) optionally forming an aqueous solution or inverse emulsion (water in oil) of the rheology modifiers, and (iii) mixing the modifiers rheology of step (i) or the aqueous solution or inverse emulsion of the rheology modifiers obtained in step (ii) with a binder, a pigment, a carrier solvent and optional additives in order to form a coating composition, wherein the rheology modifiers are water soluble polymers having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of at least 1'000'000 g / mol and an intrinsic viscosity of at least 2.5 dl / g, both are determined by size exclusion chromatography, and wherein the water soluble polymers are in the form of solid particles, and wherein the polymers are composed of monomer units derived from (i) at least one monomer of formula I R1 and R2 may be the same or different and are hydrogen, C1-6 cycloalkyl or C5-8, or R1 and R2 alkyl together with the nitrogen to which they adhere may form a heterocyclic ring of 5 or 6 members, whereby the C1-6 alkyl may be substituted with amino, hydroxyl, halogen, C1-4 alkoxy, aryl or C1-4 mono- or dialkylamino, and R3 and R4 may be the same or different and are hydrogen, C1-6, C5-8 cycloalkyl, halogen, aryl or C1-4 NHCOalquilo, whereby the C1-6 alkyl may be substituted with amino, hydroxyl, halogen, C1-4 alkoxy, aryl or C1-4 mono- or dialkylamino and (ii) optional other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, wherein the optional other ethylenically unsaturated monomers comprising at least one monomer of formula II whereby R 5 and R 8 may be the same or different and are hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl, cycloalkyl C5-8, halogen, aryl or C1-4 NHCOalquilo, whereby the C1-6 alkyl may be their tituir with amino, hydroxyl, halogen, C1-4 alkoxy, aryl or C1-4 mono- or dialkylamino, and M is hydrogen, ammonium, mono-, di-, tri- or tetra alkylammonium C1-4, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal .
