An in vitro procedure for assessing the risk of death within one year for a subject, the procedure comprising: obtaining a first ST2 level in a first test sample of a subject; obtain a second level of ST2 in a second test sample of a subject at a second time point; and compare the first and second level of ST2, in which a difference between the first and second level of ST2 indicates the risk of death of the subject within one year.
