The use of prolactin in which prolactin is a polypeptide that is at least 30% identical to the native prolactin of a mammal at the amino acid level and that possesses a biological activity of the native prolactin of the mammal, for the preparation of a Pharmaceutical composition for the treatment or relief of a neurodegenerative disease or condition in a mammal by increasing the number of neural stem cells or enhancing the formation of neurons from neural stem cells.
