Dural substitutes are provided, which include collagen treated and/or preparedto be physiologically compatible and substantially free of active viruses andprions. Suitable forms for the dural substitutes include a sponge, a film, anon-woven matrix, a felt or a combination of at least two of the foregoingforms. Also provided are a method for preparing dural substitutes and a methodfor promoting meningeal tissue growth.
