The invention relates to a method and an apparatus fordetermining a chlorate concentration in a process of treatingwater with chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant, wherein themethod comprises determining a concentration of thedisinfectant in the water, determining a chloriteconcentration in the water, providing a function to determinethe chlorate concentration depending on the concentration ofthe disinfectant and the chlorite concentration based onknown chemical relations for the generation of chlorate andchlorite in the process of treating water with thedisinfectant, and applying the function to determine thechlorate concentration based on the concentration ofdisinfectant and the chlorite concentration.
