DETERMINING CO_2 CONCENTRATIONS IN NATURAL WATERS: A REVIEW OF COMMON METHODS AND THEIR LIMITATIONS

Scientists working in carbonate systems regularly estimate the dissolved CO_2 associated with water samples to help understand water-rock interactions. Accurate measurements of dissolved CO_2 are also used in other areas, such as research on carbon cycling in fresh and marine waters, monitoring bioremediation progress in contaminated groundwater, water quality monitoring in aquaculture systems, and within the brewing and beverage industries. Available methods for CO_2 measurement vary widely in their appropriate applications, ease of use, cost, and analytical precision. In light of these differences, the advantages and disadvantages of three basic approaches to CO_2 analysis in natural waters will be discussed.
