Provided is method for evaluating the birefringence of a novel adhesive, also provided are a method for designing and a method for producing an adhesive using the evaluation method, additionally provided is an adhesive obtained by the production method, and further provided are a polarizing plate and a liquid crystal display device that use the resulting adhesive and methods for producing the polarizing plate and the liquid crystal display device. The method for evaluating the birefringence of an adhesive comprises: a step for preparing a laminated film in which an adhesive is applied to a support formed from a polymer film having an absolute inherent birefringence of 1×10-3 or less and an absolute photoelastic constant of 1×10-12 Pa-1 or less; a step for heating and stretching the laminated film; and a step for measuring the retardation of the heated and stretched laminated film and the thickness of the adhesive layer.
