The invention relates to a method and a device for the direct digitization of microwave signals (6) that are reflected by the surface (8) of a filling material (7) contained in a container (1). The stored analog values are read out from the analog memory device (15) at a rate that is lower than the scanning rate and are converted to digital values. Said digital values are made available to an evaluation device (18) for determining a filling level. The invention thus provides a method for the direct scanning and evaluation of microwave signals without transformation of the microwave signals to another frequency and time domain, as is required by the methods known from the art. The invention particularly eliminates the need for a mixer and an associated oscillator.
