The recombinant strain S2308Δpgk of Brucella abortus S2308 is obtained by partially or completely deleting the pgk gene. This attenuated strain induces greater protective immunity in 129/Sv and IRF-1 KO mice compared to the commercial strains S19 or RB51, and induces protective immunity in BALB/C and C57BL/6 mice similar to that of strain S19, having the potential to be tested as a new live vaccine against brucellosis. Other recombinant strains of the bacterium Brucella obtained by partially or completely deleting the pgk gene, with different levels of attenuation, are described.
