Provided are: a petasil zeolite catalyst for the production of light olefins which is characterized in that the maximum value of the mesopore size distribution curve obtained by means of a nitrogen absorption method is within the range of 0.6-2.0 nm, the particle size of the primary particles is within the range of 0.2-1.0 µm, and the atom ratio of the alkaline earth metal atoms to the aluminum atoms within the zeolite is 0.05 - 5; a method for the production of the catalyst; and a method for producing light olefins from oxygen-containing organic compounds having 1-20 carbon atoms by using the catalyst. The catalyst exhibits minimal activity degradation and has a long service life, the method for producing the catalyst is simple and industrially feasible, and the method for producing light olefins using the catalyst is stable over an extended period.
