The method involves detecting and following an image object from an immobile locator i.e. signaling panel (34), in a flow of images from image acquisition units i.e. camera (12) embarked in a vehicle (30). A visibility distance is calculated relative to a distance covered by the vehicle between an instant at which the object is detected for a premier time in the flow and another instant at which the object appears for last time in the flow. The visibility distance is calculated as sum of the covered distance and a longitudinal distance between the object and the camera at the latter instant. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for determining a longitudinal speed setpoint of a motor vehicle (2) a system for measuring visibility distance of a driver of a motor vehicle (3) a system for determining a longitudinal speed setpoint of a motor vehicle.
