The invention relates to the field of chemical engineering and biotechnology, in particular to methods for converting protein-containing materials and for using protein-containing waste to produce mixtures of natural amino acids, mixtures of low-molecular-weight peptides, and mixtures of oligopeptides, which mixtures can be used in the production of reagents for the detoxification and bactericidal treatment of sewage sludge, surface-active substances, wetting agents, foaming agents, cleaning agents and detergents. A method is claimed for converting protein-containing waste by hydrolysis with aqueous solutions of alkalis, which method is characterized in that additives in the form of ammonium salts of organic and mineral acids are introduced into the reaction mixture of the above-mentioned components, and the above-mentioned waste is treated in combination with water, an alkali and an additive in a ratio of 1:(0.3-1.5):(0.03-0.45):(0.01-0.2), at a temperature of 100-110°С for 20-60 min.
