Systems and methods for controlling an inertia of a synchronous condenser (105) are described. An example system (100) may include a motor (110), bidirectional power source (115), and at least one control device (120). The bidirectional power source (115) may be coupled to the motor (110). The at least one control device (120) may be configured to identify (210) the power disturbance event, determine (225) an amount of power to supply to or receive from the motor (110) to obtain the desired inertia, and control (230) the supply of power from the power source (115) to the motor (110) or from the motor (110) to the power source (115) based upon the determined amount of power.
