A method for extracting and reporting a foundation fieldbus device description (DD) file (116) for device selection and data validation includes obtaining the DD file (116) for an intelligent field device (H1 device) (115), extracting device information from the DD file (116), reading live data generated by the H1 device (115) and generating a report (108) including compliant values and functionality of the H1 device (115).
