The coupler (12) has several connection points which are provided for connecting an optical line termination with subscriber stations (ONT1-ONTn). The subscriber station is provided with identification element. The identification element is provided to reflect the optical signal (M) received at subscriber station so as to identify the connection point. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) subscriber station; and (2) method for automated identification of assignment of participants to connection points in passive optical networks.
