Depositing metal nanoparticles on a surface, preferably an electrode, which is at least partially immersed in an aqueous anion containing solution, comprises depositing the nanoparticles on the surface under the action of applied electric potential, and simultaneously immersing the surface at least partially in a liquid organic phase, which is immiscible with the aqueous solution and contains a metal salt soluble in the organic phase. An independent claim is also included for the surface coated with the nanoparticles, prepared by the above method, where the average size of the nanoparticles is 60-300 nm.
