The method involves activating a heating element (2) during a predetermined time period for short-term increasing of temperature in the surrounding of the heating element. The temperature in the surrounding of the heating element is measured as function of time by a temperature sensor (1) e.g. thermocouple, where the temperature sensor and the heating element are thermally coupled with one another. A temperature curve is evaluated for determining a decay time, where the decay time is a measure for velocity of liquid in the surrounding of the heating element and/or the temperature sensor. An independent claim is also included for a flow sensor for measuring flow rate of liquid on thermal way.
