The system has a cutting plate (2) attached to a tool holder (1) and comprising a cutting edge combination with main and auxiliary cutting edges (6, 7). First and second processing stations are provided for causing relative movements between a workpiece (4) and the tool holder. The cutting plate is inserted into a tool holder of a third processing station. The main cutting edge of the combination is positioned in the third processing station as the auxiliary cutting edge, and the auxiliary cutting edge of the combination is positioned in the third processing station as the main cutting edge. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a machine tool system.
