The method involves providing an operating signal based on a control signal for operating a fitting (102), where the operating signal is provided after reception of the control signal after a variable delay time. The variable delay time is adjusted for maintaining a response time of the fitting within a tolerance range, where the adjustment of the delay time is performed based on actual response time of the fitting. The actual response time is measured between the reception of the control signal and reaching of an end position of a locking or controlling unit (118) of the fitting. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a fitting.
